Toast
Toast refers to sliced bread that has been browned and made crisp by exposure to heat
Oh toasted slice, thou art a noble fare,
From oven’s womb or brave electric flame;
Thy golden hue dost make the morning fair,
And lift the soul, though thou art but a grain.
When butter melts upon thy warmèd face,
’Tis like the sun upon a field of wheat;
And jam, like rubies, taketh gentle place,
Bestoweth thee a robe both rich and sweet.
Thou serv’st with egg, with bean, with fruit or meat,
Thy crunch doth speak of virtue, firm and wise;
Though humble-born, thy taste is pure and fleet,
A banquet made of crust and goodly guise.
So let the feast begin, and sing we most:
All hail the morn, and hail thee, noble toast!
